“Hunting Butterflies” is Otar Iosseliani’s requiem for aristocratic Europe. The film’s title is a metaphor: a butterfly is something exquisitely beautiful, fragile, and ephemeral. To hunt it is to try to possess this beauty, which ultimately leads to its destruction. It is a film about how we lose our soul in exchange for possessions and money.
