In French, “chantera pas” means “will not sing.” French teachers used to use this term for children who lacked a musical ear. In this title, Iosseliani identifies himself and all free artists as “chantrapas”—those who refuse to sing to another’s tune. A censor who restricts an artist for ideological reasons is no better than a producer who crudely interferes with the author’s vision for commercial gain. In both cases, the artist is forced to make a choice: to yield or to fight.
